Carnivals and Public Schools

My daughter brought me home this today in her backpack:

It's a flyer for her school's annual carnival. From the looks of the flyer, it doesn't appear the carnivals of my youth at Heyburn Elementary could compare. I'm used to cake walks, fishing ponds, face painting, and schoolmade chili (I still crave it nightly). But noooooo. The public school around here has to outdo all the charter schools and fancy private schools and homeschooled schools. And boy howdy, you'd better believe I'll be a-goin' to this carnival. Take that, $10,000/year tuition private schools! You can have your fancy uniforms; we've got pizza, rides, sno cones, nachos, games, cotton candy, and prizes. But please, no clowns. Education at its finest and tastiest.

Lucas's school had the exact same carnival. It was fun but honestly it didn't even come close in comparison to the Heyburn carnival. I think my parents still have all the greatest games. (the wheel of fortune game, made by my father)

So true, Jill. I think your dad's wheel of fortune game was at our high school graduation party. And who can forget the infamous Heyburn Haunted House run by the LDS missionaries?! The Heyburn School Carnival was easily one of the highlights of my year. I especially loved the cinnamon twist they gave with the chili. Urrrhurhhh (that's me drooling). And it was always so cheap.

If school lunches were still like Heyburn Elementary school lunches, I would go and eat lunch at the cafeteria every day.

Seriously. Remember the time our neighbor, who was oe of the school lunch ladies, gave our family a pot of leftover spaghetti from school lunch? I thought I'd died and gone to heaven. I loved the spaghetti! I know people like to make fun of how bad school lunch is, but I've got to admit I've always loved it. If I could, I'd give all the old lunch ladies a hug right now.

I'm glad I am not alone in my love for school lunch back then. The problem with now is that they don't seem to really make anything. Everything comes prepared. Even the PB&Js come individually wrapped (without the crust) (you can buy them at Costco). Here at my work our cafeteria has chili every Friday and I eat it almost every Friday. It never fails to remind me of the Heyburn school carnival. Don't you love those days when we all got on the cake walk at the same time to make sure we got a cake to take home? Now they just do cupcakes (if they even have one). Lame.
